Passing the Test

Pericope: 1 Corinthians 11:23-32 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. 31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. 32 Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world.
Sermon Text: 1 Corinthians 11: 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. Sermon Title: Passing The Test!
Point 1. Recognize the manner of the meal. Vs 23, 24, 25 23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread. 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” ”25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
Point 2. Communion reveals who Jesus is. Vs 26 26For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
Point 3. Communion reveals who you are! Vs 28 28Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup.
Lamentations 3:40 40Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord.
Matthew 7: 5 Wipe that ugly sneer off your own face, and you might be fit to offer a washcloth to your neighbor.
2 Cor 13: 5 5 Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?
Point 4. Sometimes you have to retake the test. Vs 31 31If we get this straight now, we won’t have to be straightened out later on. Better to be confronted by the Master now than to face a fiery confrontation later.

1 Corinthians 11:23-34 English Standard Version (ESV)
LEADER 23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread,

24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
LEADER  25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
LEADER 27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.
28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
LEADER  29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. LEADER 31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged.
32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.
LEADER 33 So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another—
34 if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home—so that when you come together it will not be for judgment. About the other things I will give directions when I come.
