Do Over

Sermon Text: Mark 16: 7 But go, tell His disciples and Peter that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you.¨

Sermon Title: The Power of a Second Chance Pt 4: Do Over
Because of the resurrection:
1. A second chance is Possible.
2. A second chance is Potential.
3. A second chance is emPowering.

Point 1: Because of the resurrection, a second chance is possible.
Though we may fail God miserably, He still wants us to know that there is a second chance. On that Sunday morning, the angel told the women to go and tell the disciples and Peter that Jesus is alive.

Point 2: Because of the resurrection, a second chance is potential.
These words from the angel to Peter point to the possibility of second chance, but it also points to the potential of the second chance.
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Romans 6:22
But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.
The Bible is full of second chances:
Adam and Eve after eating the forbidden fruit
Abraham after lying twice about Sarah his wife
Moses after killing an Egyptian
Samson after revealing the secret of his god given strength
David after his lust passion with Bathsheba and killing her husband
Jonah after he ran from God given assignment

Point 3: Because of the resurrection, a second chance is empowering.
In the last chapter of John, we find a wonderful picture of Jesus assigning Peter to an awesome task.
Jesus:
Reassures Peter’s love
Restores Peters confidence
Reinstated Peter to the ministry
1 Peter 1:3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

Life Application:
1. Write down the one thing you regret and need a do over for
2. Ask God to forgive you
3. Ask God for His power not to do this over again

The Power of a Second Chance Pt 3 Pete Don’t Fail me Now

Sermon Text: John 21: 15(b) …Simon do you truly love me…?

Sermon Title: The Power of a Second Chance Pt 3 Pete Don’t Fail me Now

Point 1: Give second chances because you will need one Matt 18: 15, 21

Point 2: Receive second chances because they release you to try again/harder. Luke 22: 31

·       No second chances bind you up and

·       Worry about mistakes and punishment instead of risk taking

·       Jesus saw Peter had potential

·       Jesus prayed for him because he knew he would fail

·       John MacArthur writes “peter was exactly like most Christians, both carnal and spiritual. he succumbed to the habits of the flesh sometimes, he functioned in the spirit other times. he was sinful sometimes, but other times he acted the way a righteous man ought to act.”

Point 3: Second chances intensifies your commitment John 21: 19

MAKEOVER...The Power of a SECOND CHANCE

2

Sermon Text: John 20: 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
Sermon Title: The Power of a Second Chance
Point 1: The chance to doubt vs 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it. [I will never believe ESV]”
Proverbs 16:13 says, “Kings take pleasure in honest lips.” Of course, God does too. And I also believe that if you seek God, you’ll find Him.
Deuteronomy 4:49 says, “But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
• I believe that if you honestly admit where you struggle with doubts, but you really want to know God in spite of them, He will lead you to a place where you will be content with the answers.
1 Chronicles 28:9 says, “If you seek Him, He will be found by you.” He also says in
Malachi 3:10 – “Test me in this.” Go ahead. See if I don’t answer your questions.
1 Chronicles 28:9 says, “If you seek Him, He will be found by you.” He also says in Malachi 3:10 – “Test me in this.” Go ahead. See if I don’t answer your questions.

Point 2: The chance to see for yourself vs 26 A week later…Jesus came and stood among them
• The 1st way Jesus dealt with a doubting disciple is this: He knew them. Thomas had said, “Unless I see Him and touch Him, I won’t believe.”
• And when Jesus showed up, look at what He said: “Put your finger here in My side. See My hands. See the hole where the spear went it. Go ahead… touch it.”

• In fact, the 2nd way Jesus dealt with the need to see for himself: He invited him. Come here! Come look at me.

• And the 3rd way Jesus dealt with Thomas need to see for himself is this: He didn’t really scold Thomas for doubting.

Point 3: The chance to believe vs 27 …Do not disbelieve, but believe (29) Jesus said to him Have you believe because you have seen me? ESV Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believed.
• Jesus never minds proving himself. Jesus gave Thomas the chance to believe. Jesus wanted Thomas to believe. Jesus encouraged him to believe.
