The Battle Within: I Have Had Enough

SERMON TEXT: Kings 19: 4, 8 while he himself went a day’s journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. (NIV)
SERMON TITLE: The Battle Within:  I Have Had Enough
2 King 2:11-12 As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. 12 Elisha saw this and cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!”
POINT 1 – HE RAN TO THE DESERT.  VS. 3 3 Elijah was afraid[a] and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there,-
James 5:17 17 Elijah was a man just like us. (With like passion KJV) (NIV)
POINT 2 – HE REFLECTED VS. 4 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”
Gal 6:9 states, Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (NIV)
POINT 3 – HE WAS RESTORED – VS. 5 - 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.  All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”:
Psalm 91:11 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; (NIV) and HEB. 1:14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?
POINT 4 – HE RETURNED TO THE FIGHT – VS. 8 -  8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.
POINT 5 – RECOVERED HIS SWAGVS. 9-13
1 Kings 19:9-13 9 There he went into a cave (in Mt. Horeb/Sinai) and spent the night. And the word of the LORD came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”10 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” 11 The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

The Battle Within: Winning Rules

Title: The Battle Within: Winning Rules
Text: Colossians 3: 1 - 17
Rule 1: Set your heart vs. 1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
Definition: Set your hearts translates the Greek “seek” (RSV), which is further expanded in verse 2 by keep your minds fixed.
 1.   We’ve died
 2.   Our life is hidden with Christ (3b)
 3.   Christ is our life (4a)
 4.   Christ will come again (4b)
 5.   We will appear with Him in Glory (4c)
Rule 2: Silence your emotions vs. 4 Put to death, therefore, what belongs to your earthly nature…
Definition: The figurative expression put to death is a forceful one and should be retained if possible.
Rule 3: Showcase your relationships vs. 12 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Rule 4: Secure yourself in Christ vs. 15 Let the peace of God rule in your hearts…

The Battle Within: Me vs. Me The Rematch

Pericope: Romans 7: 7 - 25
Sermon Text: Romans 7: 17, 25 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me
Sermon Title: The Battle Within: Me vs. Me The Rematch

Point 1: My Desire vs. 18b For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out I love the fact Paul says he has a desire to do what is right. He admits to the dualism of desire.
My wrong is defined by what I want to do right. If I don't want to do right then my wrong is not wrong to me.

Point 2: My Dilemma vs. 19 For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing. Listen to how Paul described his dilemma with his own flesh:
· (v15 NLT) “ I don’t understand myself at all!”
· (v16 NLT) “I know perfectly well that what I am doing is wrong.”
· (v17 NLT) “ I can’t help myself”
· (v18 NLT) “ I know I am rotten through and through so far as my old sinful nature is concerned”
· (v18 NLT) “ No matter which way I turn – I can’t make myself do right”
· (v21 NLT) “When I do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong.”
· (v24 NLT) “ What a miserable person I am.”
Point 3: My Defeat vs. 23b waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members

Point 4: My Deliverance vs. 24, 25 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25. Thanks be to God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! In the following verses Paul lays out the only way of deliverance. (24a) "Wretched man that I am."
There is nothing sweeter to the Lord's ears than these words. "Wretched man that I am." With them Paul states the seriousness of his personal condition and that he cannot do anything about it.

Conclusion: God knows when self-will runs out and He has provided the way of escape. And what is the way of escape? Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you (James 4:7). "No temptation has over taken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful." Depend upon the faithfulness of God because God is the only One Who can overcome His Laws. We see this in the reason for the Cross of Christ. Paul did and so can you and I. We can win The Battle Within Its kind of like this…
