Forgiveness is Fundamental

Sermon Text: Matt 18: 21The Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brothers when he sins against me? Up to seven times?"
Sermon Title: Forgiveness is Fundamental
Ø  Luke 6:31, 37-38 -31Do to others as you would have them do to you. 37"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."
Point 1: Foundational to our faith
Ø  Genesis 3: 6, 15 - When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.  And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring[a] and hers; he will crush[b] your head, and you will strike his heel.”
Ø  Hebrews 12:14-15 - 14 Try to live in peace with everyone, and seek to live a clean and holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. 15 Look after each other so that none of you will miss out on the special favor of God. Watch out that no bitter root of unbelief rises up among you, for whenever it springs up, many are corrupted by its poison.
Point 2: Failings of a fallen world Gen 3: 21 - 21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.
Luke 23:34- 34Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
Ø  #1 – David and Saul – 1 Sam 24:7, 10-12
Ø  #2 – Esau Forgives Jacob – Gen. 33:4, 11  4 But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept. 11 Please accept the present that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me and I have all I need." And because Jacob insisted, Esau accepted it.
Ø  #3 Moses Numbers 12:1–13So Moses cried out to the Lord, “Please, God, heal her!”
Ø  #4 Joseph Genesis 45:14-15 - 14 Then he threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin embraced him, weeping. 15 And he kissed all his brothers and wept over them. Afterward his brothers talked with him
Ø  #5 Jesus – Luke 23:34 - 34Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
Ø  Hebrews 10:27 - but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.
Point 3: Forfeit or fuel your future Luke 9:62
Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
·        Ephesians 4:32 - Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
·        Matthew 6:14-15 - 14 "If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. 15 But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.;
·        Romans 12:18 - 18 Do your part to live in peace with everyone, as much as possible.
