Who Has the Gold Makes the Rules

Sermon Text: Exodus 3: 21, 22 And I will make the Egyptians favorably disposed toward this people, so that when you leave you will not go empty-handed. Every woman is to ask her neighbor and any woman living in her house for articles of silver and gold and for clothing, which you will put on your sons and daughters. And so you will plunder the Egyptians

Point 1: Gold Rings Exodus 12: 35, 36 The Israelites did as Moses instructed them and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold and for clothing. The Lord made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so they plundered the Egyptians

Now the interesting thing about the text is (a) the suddenness with which the Israelites received their wealth, (b) why did they receive it, and (c) how much they receive?

Point 2: Gold Things Exodus 32: 1 – 8 When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”

2 Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. 4 He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”

5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival to the Lord.” 6 So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.

7 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. 8 They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’

The Israelites did what they thought they were supposed to do. Remember Moses originally told them they were going into the desert for three days to sacrifice to their God. Exodus 3: 18b...Let us take a three day journey into the desert to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God. Sacrifice also means festival. The Hebrew for festival also means when we meet God. Moses disappears for more than three days. They proceed with their plans to meet God. The problem is they became confused with who was there God and Aaron didn’t correct them...

Point 3: Gold Means Exodus 36: 6, 7 6 Then Moses gave an order and they sent this word throughout the camp: “No man or woman is to make anything else as an offering for the sanctuary.” And so the people were restrained from bringing more, 7 because what they already had was more than enough to do all the work. Now fast forward. The Israelites seem to have gotten religion along the way. Now that it is time for them to build the tabernacle/church they give so much of what they have Moses has to make them stop. What happened to change them? (1) The ring leaders were wiped out by God...Moses broke the ten commandments, mixed in water made them drink it and the ground open up and swallowed them up...right leadership is everything (2) God continued to reveal himself to them. (3) They gained more faith in God (4) Moses told them what they were supposed to do with their gold

Conclusion: What should you do with the gold you have? Use your gold wisely.

(1) Take your golden time...

(2) Give your golden talent to...

(3) If you are a graduate...

(4) Complete a commitment card to build...

(5) Learn how to invest your gold in your future and not in things...
