Pericope: 2 Sam 9: 1 - 13

Sermon Text: 2 Sam 9:13  And Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem because he always ate at the king’s table; he was lame in both feet.

Sermon Title:  The Place of Lo Debar

Point 1: The Place of  our Past   vs. 3 The  king asked “Is there no one still alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?”   Ziba answered the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is lame in both feet.”

Mephibosheth’s life at Lo Debar determined the life he would live in the future and person the he would become. 

Point 2: Present vs. 6 - 6 When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honor. David said, “Mephibosheth!”  “At your service,” he replied.

Mephibosheth’ s present was a gift and he did not squander the moment.  He did not linger in yesterday. 

Matthew 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. 

Psalm 118:24 The LORD has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad.  John the Divine said

Revelation 1:10  On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet,

Psalm 90:12 Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Point 3:  Perfecting vs. 12-1312 Mephibosheth had a young son named Mika, and all the members of Ziba’s household were servants of Mephibosheth. 13 And Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king’s table; he was lame in both feet.  It is clear in the text that Mephibosheth matured. 

Hebrews 12:6 says the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”

Conclusion:

1.  Don’t wallow in your past.  Use it

2.  Maximize the moment.

3.  Measure yourself against perfection, not completion.  Rom 8:28 - 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.

THE MESSAGE SAYS IT THIS WAY - He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.

Point 1: Learn How To… be left @ Lo Debar vs. 2 Samuel 4: 4 (Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was lame in both feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel. His nurse picked him up and fled but as she hurried to leave, he fell and became crippled, His name was Mephibosheth.)

In the text 2 Samuel 9: 1 – 13 you don’t understand what happen to Mephibosheth until you read 2 Samuel 4: 4. There we find the story of how Mephibosheth learned how to be left.

Point 2: Learn How To…@ Lo Debar vs. 6 When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honor.

The text tells us David inquired who could he bless from his long time friend Jonathan house. Mephibosheth was the answer. So when Mephibosheth showed up he bowed down. I am perplexed how does a crippled man bow? The only thing I can think of is he learned how to live in Lo Debar.

Point 3: Lear How To…@ Lo Debar vs. 13 And Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the kings table. And he was crippled in both feet.

When it was time for Mephibosheth to relocate he never hesitated. You may say neither would I, but you would be surprised at how many people get so accustom to Lo Debar that can’t see themselves any where else.

Sermon Text: Deuteronomy 8: 1 Be careful o follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land that the Lord promised on an oath to your forefathers.

Sermon Title: Thanksgiving: UNFORGETTABLE!

Point 1: Remember when…lead you vs. 2 Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years… In the text Moses told the Children of Israel God’s leadership is worth remembering. How does someone find there way for 40 years in the Wilderness unless they are lead.

What was God up to when He was leading Israel? Look in vs. 2, 3 …to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands (1) God wanted to Israel to become humble…you follow better when you are humble (2) God wanted them to know what was in there hearts…some times you don’t know what’s in your heart until you are put under pressure (3) God wanted them to learn how to depend on his word not his hand...

Point 2: Remember when…fed you vs. 3 He humbled you , causing you to hunger and then feeding you you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live by bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

Psalms 103: 1 – 5 puts it this way Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name!

²   Bless the Lord, O my soul,

    And forget not all His benefits:

³   Who forgives all your iniquities,

    Who heals all your diseases,

⁴   Who redeems your life from destruction,

    Who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies,

⁵   Who satisfies your mouth with good things,

    So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Point 3: Remember when…became your God vs. 11 Verse 11 Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God…

This verse gives us the most important reason Moses wants them to be thankful by remembering God became their God. God had a choice in the matter.

Sermon Title: The Principles and Power of Planting

Point 1: The Perfect Promise vs. Genesis 8:22 “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.”

Context: This is right after God destroyed the earth with the flood. The flood had disrupted the life cycle and laws... The principle concern of Noah and his family is sowing... God sought to restore the laws of sowing and reaping. This life cycle is the foundation of how we tap into...

Genesis 8: 20 The Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it, (21) the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done. Let me repeat how this happens—because Noah planted a sacrifice. 

Point 2: Paralyzed from Planting vs. Ecclesiastes 11:4 Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.

Shepherds Luke 2: 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.[fear not KJV] I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people.

Disciples Matt 14: 27 But Jesus immediately said to them; “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

Isaiah 41: 3 For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. 

Joshua 1: 6 – 9

Point 3: Planting Produces a Plethora vs. Galatians 6:7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be marked. A man reaps what he sows. Paul told the Galatians God guarantees what he says.

Genesis 3: 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

James 2: 14, 17 What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds… (17) In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

Point 4: There is a Permanent Seed vs. John 12:24 I tell you the truth unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 

Jesus likens himself to a corn seed in the text. He says the seed does not produce until it is planted.

The Grace Effect: 2 Corinthians 12: 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”  Notice the scripture says the power of God is made perfect in weakness not my weakness

Conclusion: When we grasp and apply what God did when he was invoked to do by Noah’s sacrificial planting, we can tap into a fail proof system.

In this familiar verse there are some unfamiliar revelation we need to comprehend. Before we can comprehend the revelation we must grasp the context.

Context: This is right after God destroyed the earth with the flood. The flood had disrupted the life cycle and laws... The principle concern of Noah and his family is sowing... God sought to restore the laws of sowing and reaping. This life cycle is the foundation of how we tap into...

Solomon taps into the human psyche of why we do not reap the harvest due us. He plainly says we do not plant; not just finances; we do not give of ourselves, we do not forgive, we do not plant whatever seeds of life that need to be planted; because of fear. We are too busy watching the conditions and waiting for the perfect time. I will forgive when I stop hurting. I will give when I have more...

Point 3: Planting Produces a Plethora vs. Galatians 6:7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be marked. A man reaps what he sows. Paul told the Galatians God guarantees what he says. Paul also says in Ephesians 3: 20 he will do exceedingly abundantly more than you can ask or think by the power that works in you. Proverbs adds 3: 9 Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.

        Now I most of us is thinking about material/financial blessings that is produced. I want to expand your thinking. I need you to understand there are spiritual fruit we need more than financial fruit. We need the fruit of the spirit. That's originally what Paul is talking about. That's why he talks about the Galatians 5: 22 fruit of the spirit; love joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.

Point 4: There is a Permanent Seed vs. John 12:24 I tell you the truth unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.

When we plant Jesus into our lives he produces the fruit of eternal life. No other seed or planting process...

        Remember planting financially, words or deeds is to enhance your lifestyle not to earn your salvation or work for your blessings. The system God set up in Genesis 8: 22 is the law he put in place to bring increase into your life, NOT to save your life. Planting and harvesting is not works for salvation. Neither isn’t works to be blessed. Remember God said in Gen 8: 21 man has an inclination to be sinful but he set up the system any way. The system only...

Point 1: Remember It’s His Table vs. 24, 25 and when he had given thanks, he broke it an said, “This is my body, which is for you do; this in remembrance of me 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Point 2: Remember, Act Like You Been Somewhere vs. 20 When you come together, it is not the Lords Supper you eat,

I can remember when I was a child my parents would always say when we going somewhere we had never been, act like you been somewhere. In fact, we had not been many places, that's why we were acting like we hadn’t. Paul was saying when you come to the Lords house act like you been somewhere. Know how to act.

Point 3: Remember You Can Turn The Table I Cor. 11:27-30 "Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep."

Point 1: Remember You Are Surrounded Psalms 23: 5

Point 2: Remember You Can Recline Luke 22: 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table.
