You've Got the Power!

Sunday May 24, 2015 – NLC  #UGotPower
Pericope: Acts 2:1-4
Sermon Text: Acts 2:4, 19:2 -4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them. 2 and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
Sermon Title:  You’ve Got the Power!
Point 1:  Jesus Commissioned us for power – John 20:21-2221 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
Point 2:  Jesus Commanded us…to be baptized or clothed in the Holy Spirit – Acts 1:4-5 (4) On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. (5) For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
Point 3:  Jesus has a cause for us… What's the cause?  They and we need power to carry out Jesus work.  Acts 1:8 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
The cause of Christ:
a)  Witness (martyrs)
b)  Turn the world upside down (acts…)
c)  Grow the kingdom
d)  Defeat the enemy – Mark 16:17-18
Four accounts of don't go until you get the power:
a)  Philip – Acts 8:12-13 - 12 But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw.
b)  Saul – Acts 9:15 -15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel.
c)  Peter – Acts 10:45-48 - 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.
Then Peter said, 47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
d)  Ephesians – Acts 19:2 - 2 and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
Point 4:  Jesus wants us to Comply… Acts 2:1 - 2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
If you are already a LifeChanger then I encourage you to do two things:
1.  Ask yourself have you been baptized in the Holy Spirit Charismatic…gift
2.  If not ask for the overshadowing satiation in excess baptism
3.  If you do have the baptism of the Holy Spirit start operating in His power…
How do you know you received the baptism of the Holy Spirit:
1.  Acts 2: 4 says filled Greek word saturate/excess unexplainable moment of sensing the presence of God
2.  You may or may not speak in tongues, tongues is a gift not evidence
3.  Power to produce full grown 9 fruits of the Spirits
Point 5:  There are Consequences…to having power… Acts 2:4, 8, 11 - 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”
1.  The whole world is witnessed to
2.  They used the language of the world to talk to the world
3.  The word is given just like the first Pentecost Moses brought the Ten Commandments

Minister Dorsey - Wednesday Bible Study - Waiting to Wail

Sermon Title:   Waiting to Wail
Sermon Text Ex 1:15-21
Little History:  As we are looking at Pentecost - which means 50 – It is sometimes referred to as the  "Birthday of the Church" because in the NT in the Book of Acts Ch 2,  it was when the Holy Spirit fell on the disciples and 120 other believers.  They became the first fruits of the first church which is what Pentecost was about.
So, in NT in Acts Chapter 1:4  before his ascension Jesus gives the disciples a command, he tells them they are not to leave Jerusalem -- Basically they are to WAIT for the gift the father had promised
Exodus 1:15-21
POINT 1 The Greater Good of God
v.17 The midwives  however feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt told them to do
Sometimes when waiting and to be able to wail we must push back the worlds agenda to be able to push forward Gods plan.
God chose 2 women to protect the continuation of the species knowing life is in the seed of the man.
POINT 2  The SEED:  Mystery and history of man  v.20
v.20 God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous
Everything is contingent on the seed and these 2 women were chosen to protect it, and even nurture it to propel it into it's destiny because we know in the very next chapter Moses the DELIVERER is born!
POINT 3. The Bride
We, men and women,  are the Bride of Christ and it’s going to take the Bride to usher in this last move.  Everyone must be in their position.  Men and women Side-by-side!  We know the blessing comes when we are on one accord, unified in purpose, same heart same mind.  Respecting and loving each other in our relationships and in the community of God.
Scripture tells us in Acts
Acts 2:1 NIV   When the day of Pentecost came they were  all together in one place
KJV  And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.    To fill completely AND To complete entirely, to be fulfilled of time
Like Shiphra and Puah – be on one accord and defy the world’s agenda to propel God’s agenda.  Sometimes we have to go back to the beginning.  The time when we first accepted Christ.  Repent for not loving him first completely and totally.  Making him the apple of our eye – then loving each other in our relationships and in our community.

APPLICATION
Oh how I desire to experience that fervency that I had in the beginning
There's an old song that often fall on my heart and preparing this sermon, God dropped it on my heart again. It's called take me back and it was written by Andrea Crouch.  some of the lyrics are:

Take me back, take me back dear Lord,
to the place where I first received you.
Take me back, take me back dear Lord where I FIRST believed

The Pentecost Experience Pt 1

Sermon Text: Acts 1: 5 For John baptized  with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit
Sermon Title: The Pentecost Experience Pt 1
Point 1: Person of the Holy Spirit Matthew 3: 16, 17…At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him…This my Son…
There are three levels of relationship. Physical. Emotional. Spiritual. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit. 2 Corinthians 13: 14 The Message bible The amazing grace of the Master, Jesus Christ, the extravagant love of God, the intimate friendship of the Holy Spirit, be with all of you. The Holy Spirit is gentle and not forceful. Therefore you cannot grieve the Holy Spirit Ephesians 4: 30
The Holy Spirit is soft spoken 1 Kings 19: 12, 13…And after the fire there came a whisper…Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah."
The Holy Spirit has two love languages… Acts 1: 4…"Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift [the Holy Spirit] my Father promised…Psalms 27: 8 AMP You have said, Seek My face [inquire for and require My presence as your vital need]. My heart says to You, Your face (Your presence), Lord, will I seek.
Psalms 145: 1 - 3 I will extol you, my God and King, and bless you name forever and ever. Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.

Point 2: Purpose of the Holy Spirit  Acts 1: 8b…and you will be witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." The Holy Spirit has multiple purposes.
Jesus also says the Holy Spirit will lead or guide us into all truth. John 14: 26…will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Jesus says the Holy Spirit is our comforter who comes along side of us. John 14: 16…He will give you another Helper/Comforter/Counselor The Greek word for another means another helper just like me NOT a different helper.

Point 3: The Place of the Holy Spirit 1: 4, 8 - 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Point 4: Power of the Holy Spirit Acts 1: 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you…
The Greek word that is used for power in the text Dynamite...
Ephesians 3: 20 He will do exceedingly abundantly by the power that works within you. John 4: 4… put it another way for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
Life Application:
1.   Become…on the third level of relationship
2.   Submit yourself…

1: Wait on God – Gen 21:5 - 5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
2: Continue no matter What –
The Journey (Abraham Visits 17 Locations)

The land of Canaan would be the inheritance of Abraham's descendants but Abraham would only be a pilgrim there. On his journey to Canaan there were seventeen places that Abraham visited recorded in the Old Testament. Each of these places are important in the history of Israel and there is evidence of their existence in ancient times through archaeology.

1. Ur of the Chaldees was the original home of Abraham. It was one of the greatest cities of the ancient world, and Ur was the capital of the ancient Chaldean Empire in ancient Mesopotamia. Sometime around 1900 BC the Lord told Abraham to leave his home and country and go to a land that He would show him. He obeyed and departed from Ur with his father Terah and his nephew Lot. (Gen. 11:31; Acts 7:2-4).

2. Haran in Mesopotamia was the first stopping place recorded inn the Bible. They dwelt here until after the death of his father Terah, and in Haran the Lord called Abraham again (Gen. 12:1-4; Acts 7:4). Nahor, Abraham's brother, had probably settled in Haran before they departed.

3. Damascus was a great city in the ancient world and it was located in ancient Aram (Syria). Abraham and his nephew Lot had departed Haran and followed the leading of the Lord. They moved southward and passed by the city of Damascus along the way and it might have been at this time that Abraham secured his servant Eliezer (Gen. 15:2).

4. Shechem or Sichem was the first place where Abraham came to in Canaan. The Lord appeared to Abraham again and confirmed his promises, and It was here at Shechem that Abraham built the first altar to the Lord (Gen. 12:6, 7).  There is much history in this place (Joshua 24:1, Judges 9:6, 1 Kings 12:1).

5. Bethel. Abraham continued his journey southward and came to a mountain near Bethel, where he built a second altar (Genesis 12:8).

6. Egypt. Abraham and his family journeyed southward through the land of Canaan and a major famine hit they migrated to Egypt. In Egypt Abraham deceived the King in order to save his own life and was expelled from the land of Egypt (Gen. 12:9-20). The king of Egypt feared Abraham because of a dream and allowed him to leave with all of his possessions.

7. Bethel. Abraham and his nephew Lot returned to their former home at Bethel, but on account of strife between their herdsmen they parted each others company as friends. (Gen. 13:1-9).

8. Hebron. Lot chose the warm climate and lush plains of the Jordan Valley and pitched his tent toward Sodom, and Abraham left the desirable Sodom and Gomorrah and sojourned at Hebron in Mamre where he heard again from the Lord and built an altar (Gen. 13:10-18). An interesting note is that Hebron was one of the oldest cities in ancient Canaan and Numbers 13:22 says that "it was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt."

9. Dan. Four kings of the east came to Canaan who were united under Chedorlaomer of Elam (the territory of ancient Ur) and made war against the five kings of Canaan. In their conquest of the Jordan Valley they captured Lot as a prisoner of war, and when Abraham heard of it he pursued the four kings and overtook them at Dan and defeated them with the help of the Lord (Gen. 14:1-14), Abraham had assembled an army of 318 men. The city of Dan was located in the north between Hazor and Damascus.

10. Hobah. Abraham and his army of servants smote the army of the 4 kings of Chedorlaomer and chased them to Hobah, which was located near Damascus. Lot and all the people with them were rescued including their belongings (Gen. 14:15, 16).

11. Salem. On his return Abraham passed through Salem (Jerusalem) and was met by a man named Melchizedek whose name means "king of righteousness". Melchizedek was a mysterious man regarded in the Bible as the priest and king of Salem. This was the first mention of the word "priest" in the Bible and he gave to Abraham bread and wine. The Bible also mentions that Abraham paid him 1/10th of all his spoils from the war as a "tithe". Hebrews 7:3 gives an interesting description of Melchizedek and therefore his identity remains a mystery. The king of Sodom also came out to meet Abraham at the same place (Gen. 14:17-21).

12. Hebron. When Abraham finally returned to Hebron God reminded him of his covenant with him and changed his name from Abram to Abraham (Gen. 15:1-21; 17:1-27). During his stay at this place Ishmael was born (Gen. 16: 1-16) and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed (Gen. 18:1 - 19:38)

13. Gerar. Abraham left Hebron and for a time sojourned among the Philistines in Gerar which was in southern Canaan west of Beersheba. It was in Gerar that Abraham deceived King Abimelech (Gen. 20:1-18).

14. Beersheba. Abraham remained at Beersheba for some time. During this time he made a covenant with king Abimelech. Later he gave birth to a natural son of him and Sarah in his old age, he named him Isaac which means "laughter". When Isaac was born Ishmael was expelled and his mother Hagar fled and was met by "the Angel of the Lord" which was the Lord Himself (Gen. 21:1-34).

15. Moriah. It was in Beersheba that Abraham received the command from the Lord to take his only son Isaac to Mount Moriah, a mountain of Salem, to offer Isaac as a burnt offering (Gen. 22:1-18).

16. Beersheba. Abraham returned to Beersheba and dwelt there for some time.

17. Hebron. Abraham bought the cave of Machpelah as the family sepulcher and buried his wife Sarah there (Gen. 23: 1-20). At the age of 175 Abraham died, and was also buried in the cave at Machpelah.

3:  Listen Intently – Gen. 22:2 - 2 Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”
4.  Respond Immediately – Gen. 22:3 - 3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about.
5: Go it Alone – Gen. 22:5 - 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”
6: Sacrifice Everything – Gen. 22:9-10 - 9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied.
7: Believe that He will Provide – Gen. 22:13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.
