Sermon Title: OJHS: The Heart of the Matter

2 base concepts.

1 Stewardship is not about your money, it is about your life.
Where your heart is there your treasure will be. Mt. 6:21
2 Stewardship is about who is in charge of your life.
You shall have no other gods before Me. Ex. 20:2

Point 1 God Owns Everything 

The earth is the Lord's and everything in it. Ps. 24:1
1 It all belongs to God.
2 God gives His property to us for our enjoyment & investment.
3 To keep perspective, God asks that we give Him the first 10% which represents giving it ALL back to Him
4 Those who live by the ownership principle, God blesses.
5 Those who steal from God, God disciplines.

Point 2 God’s Work Must Be Supported By Gods People

The Reason People Give
« Passion b/c they believe in the cause
« Affiliation b/c they belong to the organization
« Tradition b/c they have a history or practice of giving
« Recognition b/c they want to be known
« Inspiration b/c they’re captured by the project or presenter
« Obligation b/c it is the dutiful or expected thing to do
« Transformation b/c they want to make a difference
« Invitation b/c they’re invited or asked to give
« Completion b/c they’re fulfilling a commitment
A (Consistently) Regular Giving
On the first day of every week, set aside an offering of what you have earned and give it as an offering to the Lord. 1 Cor. 16:2
B (Proportionately) Responsive Giving Idea: God calls upon believers to give in proportion to His blessing upon them.
Honor the Lord w/ your wealth, w/ the first fruits of all of your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing and your vats will brim over w/ new wine. Pr. 3:9
C (Faithfully) Reliant Giving Idea: God requires that His children give based upon God’s ability to supply.
My God shall supply my need according to His riches in glory. Ph. 4:19
D (Sacrificially) Revelation Giving
God reveals a specific need and impresses upon His people to meet it.
E (Joyfully) Radiant Giving
Let each man do according as he has purposed in his heart: not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God love a cheerful giver. 2 Cr. 9:7

F (Bountifully)

Malachi 3: 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, ‘says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessings that you will not have room enough for it.”

Point 3 God Holds Every Person Accountable 

Verse: Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful. 1Cr. 4:2
Quote: To whom much is given much is required; but all will give an account for what they have been given.

Point 4 God Desires Equal Commitment, Not Equal Contribution

Jesus taught us about this truth when he spoke of the widow/s mite. Mk 12

Point 5 God Blesses the Giver in Proportion to His Giving

Give and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, they will pour into your lap. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return. Lk. 6:38

Courage for the Journey of a Lifetime

Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 23: 21b …He also went into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion.

Sermon Title: Courage for the Journey of a Lifetime

Point 1: Benaiah’s Journey vs. 20b He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. One morning, we don’t know which morning; Benaiah stared down the hard thing, jumped into a pit on a snowy day, and killed a lion.

This wasn’t the first time Benaiah had stared down an opportunity and challenge to do the hard thing for God. This was the nature of Benaiah’s journey. This is all he knew how to do. The text says in vs. 20 he struck down two of Moab’s best men.

The third thing recorded in the text says he struck down an Egyptian soldier that was over seven feet tall. Vs. 21 says, even though the Egyptian had a spear in his hand Benaiah went against him with a club.

Point 2: New Life we too are at the morning of our journey.

·       Not enough seats…

·       Not enough parking…

·       Not enough room for our children’s ministry…

·       Not enough adult classrooms...

        We have an opportunity to grow. We have an opportunity to have the guts to give God all the glory if we let him use us to solve these problems and reach more souls. Or we can commit the SIN OF OMISSION.

When it comes to God it doesn’t take more of God to do one thing and less of God to do another thing. It’s that view of God that gets us in trouble with believing God for one thing and doubting Him for another. God does all things with same amount of Godness. All problems are equal to God.

The Journey of my Life

Sermon Text: Acts 27: 23, 24 23 But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed. 24 Last night an angel of the God whom I am and whom I serve stood beside me and said, Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has generously given you the lives of all who sail with you.’

Sermon Title: The Journey of my Life

Point 1: What do you do when you are [Shipwrecked]? Acts 27: 41 But the ship struck a sandbar and ran aground. The bow stuck fast and would not move, and the stern was broken to pieces by the pounding of the surf.

(a)     You realize God blew you to that point…God is sovereign

(b)     Every season is God’s season…it may not feel like your season but it is God’s season

(c)     God is with you no matter how bad the shipwreck

Point 2: What do you do when you are [Snake bitten]? Acts 28: 3 Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand.

(a)     Don’t stop what you are doing… vs. 5 But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill. Paul never stopped serving, Paul never stopped doing what he was doing

(b)     Don’t wait to die wait for the deliverance

(c)     Defy the odds and the odds makers…there will always be somebody ready to count you out vs. 6 The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead, but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.

Point 3: Flowing in the [Supernatural] 28: 8, 9 His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him. 9 When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured.

Phil 4: 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty, I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.

(a)     Your journey always include the supernatural you just got to get in position…

(b)     Somebody is waiting on you to show your flow but they will never experience it if you are not in position

(c)     Everything you lost in the journey will be restored for the flow Acts 28: 10 They honored us in many ways and when we were ready to sail, they furnished us with the supplies we needed.

The Place of Lo Debar

Review:  Left at Lo Debar no fault of your own. 

Learn to live there so you can survive. 

Leave there every bad situation has an expiration date.  God has better after you deal with bitter

Pericope: 2 Sam 9: 1 - 13

Sermon Text: 2 Sam 9:13  And Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem because he always ate at the king’s table; he was lame in both feet.

Sermon Title:  The Place of Lo Debar

Point 1: The Place of  our Past   vs. 3 The  king asked “Is there no one still alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?”   Ziba answered the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is lame in both feet.”

Mephibosheth’s life at Lo Debar determined the life he would live in the future and person the he would become. 

Point 2: Present vs. 6 - 6 When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honor. David said, “Mephibosheth!”  “At your service,” he replied.

Mephibosheth’ s present was a gift and he did not squander the moment.  He did not linger in yesterday. 

Matthew 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. 

Psalm 118:24 The LORD has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad.  John the Divine said

Revelation 1:10  On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet,

Psalm 90:12 Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Point 3:  Perfecting vs. 12-1312 Mephibosheth had a young son named Mika, and all the members of Ziba’s household were servants of Mephibosheth. 13 And Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king’s table; he was lame in both feet.  It is clear in the text that Mephibosheth matured. 

Hebrews 12:6 says the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”

Conclusion:

1.  Don’t wallow in your past.  Use it

2.  Maximize the moment.

3.  Measure yourself against perfection, not completion.  Rom 8:28 - 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.

THE MESSAGE SAYS IT THIS WAY - He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.
