Sermon Text: Ezra
3:1-3 3 When the seventh month came and
the Israelites had settled in their towns, the people assembled together as one in Jerusalem. 2 Then
Joshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests and Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel
and his associates began to build the
altar of the God of Israel to sacrifice burnt offerings on it, in
accordance with what is written in the Law of Moses the man of God. (8c) …and
all those who had returned from captivity to Jerusalem began the work…
Sermon Title: Don’t
Mess with (t)His House: Pt 1 The House Connection
Point
1: There
is a connection between Gods house and your house.
-
Aachen Joshua 7: 10 The Lord said to Joshua, Get up! Why have you fallen on
your face? (11) Israel has sinned;
they have transgressed my covenant that I commanded them; they have taken some
of the devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own
belongings. (14) In the morning therefore, you shall be brought nearby our tribe…clans…household…man by man (20) And Achan answered Joshua, Truly I have
sinned against the Lord God of Israel
Notice
the connection between Achan and the entire nation of Israel.
Notice
the use of plural but it ends up being one individual
-
Eli Ichabod 1 Sam 4: 21 And she named the child Ichabod, saying, the glory has departed from Israel because
the ark of God had been captured and because of her father in law and her husband
Look
at the connection between the actions of Eli and his sons and the actions God
took
Notice
how the daughter in law could discern what God was doing and it even played out
in her womb. That is close to home…
-
David Ark of Covenant II Samuel 6: 10…David took it [Ark of the
Covenant] aside to Obed-edom the Gittite (11) And the ark of the Lord remained
in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months and the Lord blessed Obed-edom and all his household
Point 2. There
will always be opposition against building God’s house and your house.
Ezra 4:1-6 23-24 4 When the enemies of
Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the Lord,
the God of Israel, 2 they came to Zerubbabel and to the heads of the families
and said, “Let us help you build because, like you, we seek your God and have
been sacrificing to him since the time of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought
us here.”
3 But Zerubbabel, Joshua and
the rest of the heads of the families of Israel answered, “You have no part with us in building a temple to our God. We
alone will build it for the Lord, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of
Persia, commanded us.”4 Then the peoples around them set out to discourage the
people of Judah and make them afraid to go on building. 5 They bribed officials
to work against them and frustrate their plans during the entire reign of Cyrus
king of Persia and down to the reign of Darius king of Persia. Later Opposition
Under Xerxes and Artaxerxes 6 At the beginning of the reign of Xerxes, they
lodged an accusation against the people of Judah and Jerusalem.
Point 3. There
must be a Disposition of Defiance
in order to build the house of God. Ezra
6:14-15 14 So the elders of the Jews continued to
build and prosper under the preaching
of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah, a descendant of Iddo. They finished building the temple
according to the command of the God of Israel… 15 The temple was
completed on the third day of the month Adar…
Life Application:
1. New
Life we…
2. We
build God’s house…
3. We
build this house…
